2024's Year in Well-being

3 Trends to Carry Into 2025

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.

Oprah Winfrey

As 2024 comes to a close, we’re gifted snapshots of our lives - Spotify’s Wrapped, Google Photos’ memories, even year-end recaps from fitness studios. These moments remind us of how far we’ve come, sparking reflection and anticipation for what lies ahead.

At rooh, we’ve spent 2024 immersed in well-being - exploring, learning, and connecting. As a gift to you, here are three powerful well-being trends from 2024 that experts emphasized most, along with ways to bring them into your life as this year comes to an end and a new one begins.

Tech-Life Balance 2.0

Thanks to experts like Cal Newport and Tristan Harris, the conversation around technology usage has evolved beyond concepts like "digital detoxes." Instead, we are now focusing on smarter, more actionable approaches. With AI becoming a significant part of our daily lives, “micro-boundaries” have been introduced to help us designate offline hours and create "tech-free zones" in our homes and workspaces.

Dr. Julie Albright’s research on digital natives reveals that this balanced approach is more effective than total disconnection, empowering us to take control of our technology use.

How you can implement this: Start by identifying your two most productive hours of the day and designate them as your "power hours." During these hours, use technology intentionally by scheduling focused work and setting a timer, if needed, to complete tasks. Outside of these hours, limit your phone usage to essential calls or texts. The goal is to create a rhythm around technology usage rather than completely disconnecting.

Mind-Planet Connection

Dr. Rangan Chatterjee and Dr. Zach Bush  reminded us that personal wellness is deeply tied to the planet’s health. They argue that traditional wellness practices should consider their environmental impact, leading to the rise of "eco-therapy" and nature-based healing practices. Other experts, like botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer, are traveling the country to emphasize the importance of our relationship with nature for our overall physical and mental well-being, highlighting the Mind-Planet Connection.

How you can implement this: Take a phone-free, 15-minute walk in nature. Pay attention to your surroundings - the trees, weather, sunlight, and the sounds of nature - then mentally note your observations. When you return, spend 5 minutes writing down what you remember, connecting your self-reflection to your awareness of the environment around you.

Community-Powered Well-being

Brené Brown and Johann Hari revealed that thriving isn’t a solo journey and explored the idea that "individual self-care" is no longer sufficient. In 2024, we learned that connection combats isolation and fuels emotional resilience. Wellness tribes and growth circles became spaces for shared learning, belonging, and support. Their research shows that isolation contributes significantly to the growing mental health crisis. They explain that a sense of connection and belonging to a supportive community is vital for our overall well-being. Additionally, Adam Grant’s studies on collective resilience underscore the importance of cultivating "wellness tribes," where we can rely on one another for emotional support, personal growth, and shared learning.

How you can implement this: Create your own "wellness tribe" or "growth circle." Gather 3-4 friends or colleagues monthly, in person or virtually. Share one challenge and one recent success, creating a safe space for mutual growth, encouragement, and belonging – all things that are crucial to our well-being.
