Having it all figured out

Discovering your purpose is a deeply personal and unique journey. It’s common to feel like others have found their calling while you’re still searching

"The pursuit of meaning, not happiness, is what makes life worthwhile. And meaning, it turns out, comes from the way we connect with others, our work, and life's greater purpose."

- Emily Esfahani Smith

Discovering your purpose is a deeply personal and unique journey. It’s common to feel like others have found their calling while you’re still searching, or to feel like you’re in a race against your peers or social media to uncover your life’s calling. This feeling can create what’s known as "purpose anxiety" — the stress and unease of not having a clear direction or meaningful goal in life. However, it’s vital to remember that there’s no set timeline for finding your purpose. Your journey is entirely your own, defined by your experiences and choices.

To ease purpose anxiety, it's important to recognize and steer clear of common triggers:

  • Comparison: Constantly viewing others’ curated highlights on social media can make you feel inadequate or behind in your journey.

  • Milestone pressures: Feeling pressured to have life figured out by a certain age or stage can create unnecessary stress.

  • Societal expectations: External pressures from family, friends, or society to follow a specific path can cloud your own sense of purpose.

  • Overemphasis on passion: The idea that you must find one true passion can be overwhelming and may not reflect the reality of how purpose evolves.

To manage purpose anxiety, consider these strategies:

  • Practice self-compassion: Be gentle with yourself as you navigate your journey. Understand that uncertainty is part of the process and that it’s okay not to have all the answers.

  • Focus on values-based living: Instead of searching for a grand purpose, align your daily actions with your core values. This can provide meaning and direction in the present moment.

  • Embrace exploration: View life as an ongoing experiment. Try new things, meet new people, and stay open to unexpected sources of purpose. Every experience teaches you something valuable.

  • Be present: Practice mindfulness to stay grounded in the moment. This can reduce anxiety about the future and help you recognize purpose in everyday experiences.

At rooh, we want to remind you that each person's journey to finding purpose is uniquely their own. Some people discover their purpose early in life, while others may take decades to uncover it. And the path to purpose can vary greatly — sometimes it’s straightforward, while other times it’s filled with detours and explorations.

Remember, the search for purpose isn’t a competition or a race. It’s about how you choose to internalize and reflect on your journey. By embracing the uniqueness of your own path and being mindful of the pressures and expectations you place on yourself, you can navigate the journey to purpose with greater ease and fulfillment. The process of seeking and questioning is just as meaningful as the purpose itself.
