How pollen is the real inspiration this season

Fueling today’s newsletter 🎧: La Vie En Rose

Where I live, as we get deeper into spring, this wisping of yellow dust appears everywhere. It wasn't until recently that I realized it's just pollen. Cars and sidewalks are stained yellow and if you go for a run, there's even a slight dusting that ends up on your arms and blankets your hair.

I think everyone around me finds it to be really annoying and just a bit provoking of seasonal allergies. But the more I think about it, it feels like a small price to pay for the beginning of new life as everything grows and starts to bloom.

It serves as a reminder that the beginning stages of growth are more exciting than the full bloom. Almost as though what they say is really true - the journey is better than the final destination.

There's something remarkable in observing life processes rather than just focusing on outcomes. It makes the small steps feel less overwhelming and daunting. The older I get, the more I need to be reminded of this, and I thank the pollen for that reminder this spring.

It made me want to tell you all about an excellent new book I've been reading. Gretchen Rubin's "Secrets of Adulthood" just came out, and it feels like exactly what we need right now. She has this way of distilling complicated life ideas into simple actions that actually make sense. This mirrors what nature teaches us about pollen - that what appears at first glance to be merely an irritant is, in fact, a necessary part of the growth process. You'll love how she helps us find wisdom in those small, sometimes messy moments that make up our adult lives.

"Outer order contributes to inner calm.”

- Gretchen Rubin

Gretchen Rubin is one of today's most influential observers of happiness and human nature. She's authored numerous bestsellers including "The Happiness Project," "Better Than Before," and "The Four Tendencies," with over 3.5 million copies sold worldwide in more than thirty languages.

Her latest book "Secrets of Adulthood" takes complex life wisdom and distills it into simple, accessible concepts. Through her "brief and sharp" aphorisms. Rubin gives us tools to navigate life's transitions with greater clarity and purpose. Just as we've seen with spring's pollen - what appears insignificant often contains the seeds of something beautiful when viewed as part of a larger journey of growth.

Want to experience her wisdom in person? Grab tickets to her upcoming in-person experiences, here on the rooh site!

Try Rubin's practical "One-minute Rule" today: For just the next hour, immediately tackle any task that would take less than one minute to complete. Something like making that appointment, washing that cup, or putting away those shoes.

This simple habit, highlighted in her "Happier" podcast, prevents small tasks from accumulating. Notice how addressing these tiny tasks creates forward momentum and appreciation for small but meaningful actions.

Understanding yourself is essential for growth, right? Well, Rubin's "Four Tendencies" framework examines how we respond to expectations with ourselves and others. Are you an Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, or Rebel? Take her quiz here to know your tendency.

The hope is that this helps you find your optimal growth path - Obligers like myself for example, benefit from keeping commitments to others but not to myself. Knowing your tendency helps you appreciate your current stage while effectively moving toward your full bloom.
